Presentation
Official Master’s Degree, grant-maintained and adapted to the new European Higher Education Area. The specialization in "Early Music Perfomance” is professionally oriented and its contents are aimed for a professional performace practice training. The full name of the Master's Degree is "Musicology, Musical Education and Early Music Performance " In the ESMUC this professional specialty is offered, focusing on Early Music Performance.
Course aimed to
This Master addresses graduate students and professionals who want to specialize in early-music performance and musicological research at the highest academic level.
Duration
60 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer System Credits). To be done preferably in one Academic course, will be taught between October 2010 and June 2011.
The first half (October-January) non-instrumental group classes (modules 2 and 3) are concentrated in a very intensive weekend in the month (Friday and Saturday between 4 and 9 hours of class). Most of the teaching module 2 would consist of tutorials in many cases can be made online and / or email.
The second semester (February-June) Module 4 (mandatory) monthly follow
this pattern. The remaining modules (5 and 6) classes also focus on
intensive weekends (Friday and Saturday) but on alternate fortnights to
module 4.

1st SEMESTER:
In the first semester the following modules will be held:
MODULE 1 - "MASTER’S PROJECT / PRACTICALS AND MASTER’S DISSERTATION" (Part 1) - 15 ECTS
Sessions of performance practice, individual and collective, that will give students the possibility of develop a personal performance project, with a minimum of 30 teaching hours throughout the whole course. In addition, each student must be integrated in an ensemble proposed by the Master’s Degree, both in chamber ensembles (15 hours), or both chamber ensembles (15 hours) and orchestra/big chamber music ensembles (20 hours). These practical sessions will be carried out either in the collaborating institutions or in specific ESMUC ensembles, and may involve travel outside of Barcelona.
MODULE 2 - "RESEARCH METHODOLOGY IN MUSICAL SCIENCE AND INTERPRETATIVE IMPLEMENTATION IN PERFORMANCE PRACTICE"- 15 ECTS
Introductory seminar to the Master’s degree with group meetings and individual tutorship in which each student must present and plan an own historical performance practice project, under the musicological supervision of a course tutor. The result will be reflected in the written report, related with the Master Project/Dissertation, which must be submitted for the qualification as Master Degree.
MODULE 3 - "THEORETICAL FUNDAMENTALS OF EARLY MUSIC PERFORMANCE PRACTICE"- 10 ECTS
Theory sessions and seminars about Early Music Performance Practice, elements of the History of Performance Practice, theoretical fundamentals and cognitive implications of performances based on historical criteria, recent tendencies in early music performance, the analysis under historical criteria, documentation and resource problems for the analysis and catalogation of historical sources.
2nd SEMESTER:
In the second semester the following modules will be held:
MODULE 1 - "MASTER’S PROJECT / PRACTICALS AND MASTER’S DISSERTATION" (Part 2)
MODULE 4 - "INTERPRETATIVE PRAXIS OF EARLY MUSIC" - 10 ECTS
Theoretical and practical sessions and, monographical seminars about early music performance with historical criteria: organology, sources/treatises analysis, tuning & temperaments, rethorical analysis, computer technology applications and recording media resources.
And one of the following modules must be chosen:
MODULE 5 - "ANALYSIS AND NOTATION OF EARLY MUSIC" – 10 ECTS
Theoretical and practical sessions oriented to the analysis of methodological and interpretation problems of music until 16th Century.
MODULE 6 - "SOURCES AND REPERTORY OF EARLY MUSIC" - 10 ECTS
Theoretical and practical sessions oriented to the analysis of methodological and interpretive problems of the music of the 17th -19th centuries.

Admission requirements
Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree (or its equivalent from a foreign institution) by the time they enroll at ESMUC. The degree must be issued from either a Spanish University or an accredited institution of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). Applicants can also apply holding a degree from an accredited institution outside the EHEA; in both cases (EHEA and outside EHEA) the degree must permit access to Postgraduate Studies in the country of issue.
For graduates of Institutions outside EHEA, no official equivalency, or homologation process is needed (the official recognition by the Spanish Government of foreign degrees as equivalent to European ones), but specific cases should be consulted.
Admission process
1) Collect and scan / photocopy the following documentation:
a) Detailed Academic Record of the Bachelor studies (depending on the University, it is called sometimes Academic History or Academic Transcript).
A detailed record issued by a University includes:
- All subjects done during the Bachelor,
- grades achieved (the general grade and the grade for each subject)
- Corresponding ECTS value (European Credit Transfer System Credits) in the case of EHEA institutions; or, number of Teaching Hours per subject.
b) The Degree associated to the Academic Record presented in the previous document.
c) Detailed CV: where you specify all the education, knowledge and musical activities in music. Also, if relevant: research experience, publications, scholarships or grants obtained and professional experience.
d) Applicants should supply official records or degrees of the music studies (college / conservatory / university ) demonstrating sufficient musical competence to succeed in course work. (Intermediate or Higher level of Music Degree, Studies at a Conservatory or equivalent institution).
2) DVD recording in which the candidate performs any piece or pieces representative of their current instrumental level. Ideally, the recorded program should include major solo pieces (sonata, concerto, partita, prelude, a cantata in the case of singers), as well pieces from the representative chamber music repertoire de 20 minutes aprox.
Additionally, the conception and construction of the recorded program by the candidate has an important role in the evaluation of the applicant.

Deadline: The period of registration will be open until 18th June 2010 (in the case that you do not pre-register online, the period is only until 4th june).
Manually way to get to the registration page:
a) Go to the web: www.uab.cat
b) In the left upper corner you can change language to English.
c) Then, go to "Postgraduate" à "Official Master Programmes" à "History, Philosophy and Art" à Musicology and Music Education " (soon the new name will be updated "Musicology, Musical Education and Early Music Performance).
b) In the case of non former students of the UAB, follow the instructions online for requesting a NIA (Number of Student ID).
c) Once assigned a NIA, complete the application on-line, specifying clearly in the Professional Speciality: Early Music Performance d) Send the application via the Internet with all your scanned documentation, or,
e) send by postal mail all the required documentation together with the Application for Admission (which can be downloaded on the same website) to UAB’S Graduate School - Official Masters – Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona - 08193 Bellaterra (Barcelona. Spain).
f) Whether the pre-registration is done via the Internet or by post mail, the DVD must be mailed or deliver in ESMUC, within the same deadline (see Item 3), to the attention of Silvia Martinez, Master of Early Music, C/ Padilla, 155, Edificio L'Auditori, 08013 Barcelona.
4) Once the pre-registration process is done, you will receive the resolution from the Graduate School at UAB, both by email and by postal mail (as well, it will be published on the web) and, if you are admitted, you will receive information on the steps for the registration (which takes place in September).
Pricing
The price varies according to the nationality and legal residence of the student; the price is also established by law, the “Decreto de Precios” from the Catalonia Government. It has not been published yet for Academic course 2010-2111. However, as an orientation, prices for the current Academic Course (2009-2010) were as following:
a) Students from EU countries or foreigners of third countries with legal residence in EU: the price for the 2009-2010 academic year was 29,88 €/ECTS.
b) Non-resident foreign students, who are not nationals of member states of the European Union: around 75 €/ECTS (depending on the case, there were slight variations because of the ICP tax). The UAB offers grants that covers the price difference between non EU nationals and EU citizens).
Scholarships and grants
As an official master, financial aid may be requested, also special loans and scholarships are offered specifically for postgraduate studies by different public and private institutions.
Student card
When you enrol in a course, student get a student card from the ESMUC and another from the UAB which will allow access to the library, as well as other services and enjoy special rates at the center activities.
